Juneteenth is a day to celebrate Emancipation and an end to slavery. Cris Castro, one of our teachers of the month, planned the event with a goal of showing children unity and representation. As Cris stated for NBC15 at the event, he hopes to encourage children to appreciate their differences. “If we introduce them to great steppingstones of success, then the world is theirs and that’s all we want at the end of the day.”
The children learned about Juneteenth through books, art, and music prior to the event. They then had a special evening event which included a Juneteenth Education Station, live music from our own Casey Day, face painting, a taco truck, an ice cream truck, and an Art Silent Auction using the children’s artwork. Proceeds from the Art Auction were donated to Freedom, Inc.
